Hey there! Here you are, planning your (first) trip to Europe. You have probably flown your way to Europe and now you are wondering how you should travel from one country to another. Besides the airplane, there are many different options you can choose from and here we will show you some of them.
Travelling by plane
Let’s start with the obvious. Europe is not a very big continent and you can fly from one to the other side of it only in a couple of hours. There are different budget airlines that will bring you to the destination you want to see for sometimes as cheap as 5 euro. People often believe that budget airlines are not as save as others, but this is far from true. Flying with expensive airlines does not guarantee your safety either. Some downsides of the budget airlines are that 9 out of 10 times, luggage is not included and you will have to pay extra, the same for in-flight food and drinks. But for short flights you will most likely not need that. Also, cheaper airlines do not usually fly to a major city airports. Therefore you still have to travel for about an hour until you get to the city. These are some of the budget airlines you might want to check out for your flight:
Travelling by bus
The second option you can look into is to travel by bus. A bus will take you to your next destination without having to make any effort. You only have to sit back and relax. This can have its pros and cons. If you travel during the night, you can use this time to catch up on some long lost sleep. Also, you will save money for a hotel. However, buses can be full and in that case you might be seated to someone you do not know, so sleeping will be probably the last thing you will do during this time. The price of a ticket could already be the only reason why you want to travel through Europe by bus. For example, you can travel with Flixbus from Brussels (Belgium) to Barcelona (Spain) which might be a very long travel day since it is 24 hours, but the costs are only 40 euros. Other than the budget airlines, bus stations are often located in the city center and therefore a bus will bring you closer to your destination. A website you might also want to take a look at is Eurolines which will give you a lot of options to travel between different countries, where Flixbus mostly travels between cities. Popular to travel within the UK as well as to Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels is Megabus. If you book a popular route a couple of weeks in advance, tickets can be as cheap as 1 GBP.
Travelling by train
Train travel is maybe the most comfortable way of travelling. You can just take a seat and enjoy the view, read a book or have a conversation with some other people. But if you are looking for a cheap way of travel then this is not what you should choose. However there are always some advantages when you compare it to another type of travel. Many train stations are located in the middle of the city center, so you do not have to travel there anymore. You will most likely not have to go through security which saves you some time. If you travel a lot, this can be an important issue. Train travel is a lot better for the environment than travelling by bus or airplane. Something you might want to consider if you travel to different countries with a road-trip idea is getting a rail pass. With a rail pass the cost per trip will be cheaper then if you buy the tickets separately. To book your tickets and passes you can use Happyrail, here you can buy your tickets for different destinations in Europe. If you want to know more about a railpass you might want to check out this blog written by Nomadic Matt that will help you choose if it is useful to buy a railpass.
